What a lifetime warranty usually leaves out
Airline damage. Cosmetic wear. Normal use. Which is to say, most things that happen to luggage.
We read the warranty terms for every carry-on in our guide in full. Nearly all exclude airline damage. Most exclude cosmetic damage, including dents and scuffs. Several require you to pay shipping both ways for a claim.
What remains covered is manufacturing defects, which almost always show up in the first year. A 'lifetime' warranty is, functionally, a one-year warranty with a longer name — with one notable exception: Travelpro's Trusted Companion Promise on the Maxlite line covers airline damage for the first year, which is why it factored into our pick.
This does not make warranties worthless. It makes them a small factor, not a deciding one. Wheels and weight matter more.
