When the warehouse-size package costs more
Unit cost is on the shelf tag for a reason. It is not always in the big box's favor.
Bulk is usually cheaper per unit — usually. The exceptions cluster in three places: products that spoil before you finish them, products you use so slowly that the membership fee outweighs the saving, and products where the warehouse stocks a premium brand only, so you are comparing a bigger pack of a pricier thing.
Check the unit cost every time, and add the membership fee to the first purchase of the year. Buy in bulk what you use in bulk. Everything else is storage.
