Verdict: Karen Verified
Karen VerifiedThe short answer: A tile-drafting game that teaches in five minutes, plays in about forty, and looks beautiful on the table. It is the game we put in front of guests who say they do not like board games.
- Buy it if
- Families with kids from about eight up, couples, and anyone who wants a game that looks as good as it plays.
- Skip it if
- You want a big cooperative story game or your household finds gentle competition stressful.
- Best feature
- Rules learned in five minutes, real decisions every turn, and heavy tiles that feel lovely to handle.
- Biggest annoyance
- Scoring is fiddly the first few games and the flimsy scoring track markers get lost.
- The catch
- With two players it is a tense duel; with four it drags a little while people study the factories. The box insert is also useless once the bags are opened.
- Evaluation
- In use since November 2025
- Model
- Next Move Games Azul, 2-4 players

The 20-second verdict

It is the game we put in front of guests who say they do not like board games. Best for: Families with kids from about eight up, couples, and anyone who wants a game that looks as good as it plays. What we loved, and what annoyed us
What we loved
- Quick to teach, hard to master
- Gorgeous, heavy tiles
- Works with kids from about eight
- Tense at two players
What annoyed us
- Scoring takes a few games to click
- Four players can drag
- Box insert is poor once the bags are opened
What We Loved
Ten months and more than fifty plays, with kids, grandparents and a very competitive neighbour. The tiles click satisfyingly and the rules fit on one side of a card. The moment where someone realises they have to take five yellow tiles they cannot use is worth the price on its own. Our nine-year-old beat her uncle on her third game, which is a sign of a fair game.
What Annoyed Us
The first two games everyone asks how the scoring works, then it clicks and nobody asks again. With four players the wait between turns grows and the analysis paralysis sets in. The cardboard insert is decorative; we store the tiles in a zip bag.
The Catch
It is a light, abstract game with no theme to speak of. If your family needs a story, dragons or cooperation, this will feel like a maths puzzle. To everyone else it is a very good maths puzzle.

Performance
Every game we played ended within an hour and close enough that the last round mattered. Tile draws create real tension without dice. The game rewards planning and punishes greed, which children grasp faster than adults.
Ease of use, design, and build quality
Ease of use
Set-up takes two minutes. The player boards are clear and the tile bag makes drawing easy. Scoring markers are small and roll away.
Design and build quality
Portuguese-tile-inspired resin tiles in five colours, a large square box and pastel boards. It is the game people photograph.
Privacy and connectivity
No app, no account, nothing to connect.
Safety notes
Small tiles and markers; not for children under three. Manufacturer states 8 and up.
Cleaning, maintenance, and ongoing costs
Store tiles in a bag; wipe with a damp cloth if sticky. Boards are cardboard and should stay dry.
What it keeps costing you
| Consumables | None |
|---|---|
| Expected life | Years; the tiles are nearly indestructible |
Value
For the price of a couple of pizzas you get a game that has been played weekly for most of a year. Few purchases in this house have earned their keep so plainly.
Alternatives
Splendor has the same quick-to-learn, hard-to-master feel with gem chips.
Ticket to Ride takes longer but has players interacting on a shared map.
