What We Loved
A year in, this is the sock that gets reached for first. On a wet October hike the feet stayed warm; on a July walk the same sock was not sweaty. Three days in the same pair on a trip and nobody noticed, including us. The light cushion sits exactly under the heel and ball where boots press, and the rest is thin enough that trail runners do not feel packed. The cuff stays up and does not leave a ridge.
What Annoyed Us
After roughly two seasons of weekly use, the right heel on one pair went thin enough to see light through. Darn Tough's equivalent from the same period is still intact. The charcoal collects fluff from towels in the wash and needs a shake before it looks tidy.
The Catch
Merino is not immortal. Smartwool's blend is soft, which is why it feels nicer than the tougher socks, and softness is where durability goes. The two-year warranty covers this, but you have to do the paperwork.

Performance
Temperature handling is the headline and it delivers. Feet do not overheat in warm weather and stay tolerable in cold, and the sock dries overnight on a hostel radiator. Odour control is the merino doing its job. Cushion is light by design: enough for a boot, not enough for a long descent with a heavy pack.
